A NEW PUPPY'S BILL OF RIGHTS

A puppy must have some rights if he is to grow up respecting the rights of others. He must be brought up thoughtfully if he is to become a good canine citizen and an accepted member of the household. There are ten things that every puppy needs to be the kind of pet you had in mind when you got him.

1. A PUPPY NEEDS SOME PRIVACY.  He should have a bed of his own (it can be just a cardboard box) where he can go to rest or "take a break" from the children.
2. A PUPPY NEEDS A SCHEDULE.  It's essential when he's eating four meals a day and trying to learn why people get cross about puddles on the rug. If you don't feed and exercise him promptly, the mistake is really yours.
3. A PUPPY NEEDS PROPER FOOD.  Not cereal and vegetables. Use a good commercial balanced dog food. It's easier for you and better for your dog. And don't forget clean water at all times.
4. A PUPPY NEEDS TO BELONG.  Make sure everyone knows he's yours with an identification tag on a properly fitted collar and license tag at six months.
5. A PUPPY NEEDS HEALTH PROTECTION.  Take him to a veterinarian right away for his protective immunizations and a check for worms, and an annual booster thereafter.
6. A PUPPY NEEDS GROOMING.  All dogs should be gone over carefully once a week to check that ears are clean, nails trimmed, and coats free of mats, burrs, and parasites. They enjoy being brushed and it saves housecleaning too. Daily brushing is ideal and will keep your dog looking his best.
7. A PUPPY NEEDS EXERCISE.  Some dogs need more than others, but all need some to keep alert and healthy. The best thing is walking on a leash, and it's good for you too!
8. A PUPPY NEEDS COMPANIONSHIP.  To develop his personality and intelligence, dog must be around people. The more he is with you, the more he will respond to you.
9. A PUPPY NEEDS TOYS.  Yes, he really does. If you don't provide something suitable he will play with whatever is at hand. Teething is a serious business for a puppy, so let him have a toy that he will not confuse with something of yours.
10. A PUPPY NEEDS TO BE TRAINED.  He will be able to please you and earn the praise he loves. Teach him good manners while he is little, and take him to obedience class when he is six months old.
